PHOMI has been recognised with a Gold Award at the International Green Building Innovation Awards 2026, held in Singapore in January. The award, presented in the Innovative Materials category, cited PHOMI's econiclay technology for its demonstrated reduction in embodied carbon compared with conventional facade and interior covering systems.
What the judges evaluated
The award panel assessed submissions across four criteria: lifecycle carbon performance, raw material sourcing, manufacturing energy intensity, and end-of-life recyclability. PHOMI's eCoverings scored in the top decile for raw material sourcing, given that econiclay derives from inorganic solid waste streams that would otherwise require landfill disposal.
The panel also highlighted PHOMI's low-temperature manufacturing process as a differentiating factor. Unlike fired ceramic production, which requires kiln temperatures exceeding 1,200°C, econiclay can be processed at significantly lower temperatures — reducing per-tonne energy consumption and the associated carbon cost.
Recognition in context
The Green Building Innovation Awards are assessed by a panel of independent sustainability consultants and building engineers. Entries are evaluated against ISO 14040 lifecycle assessment standards.
"This recognition reflects more than a decade of R&D investment in econiclay as a platform technology," said the PHOMI technical director. "It validates the position we have consistently taken: that sustainable building materials should not require compromising on aesthetics or performance."
What this means for specifiers
For architects and project managers seeking to meet green building targets such as LEED, BREEAM, or EDGE, award recognition from an independent body provides additional third-party validation alongside PHOMI's existing TUV and UL certifications. Documentation in support of LEED Material and Resources credits is available from the PHOMI technical library.
